La-Londe-les-Maures, FR, 19-23 Oct 2009:

The third in the ECATS series of Student Schools dealt with the climate impact of aviation emission of today. It took place in La-Londe-les-Maures, in southern France from 19 – 23 October 2009. More than 20 participants attended this interdisciplinary leading-edge event organised by the Network of Excellence ECATS.

Introduction

Aviations contribution to climate change is an issue being addressed by the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA-2) and its related ACARE goals. Major uncertainties remain when quantifiying magnitude of aviation impact on climate change. Several expert groups are working on the issue, e.g. IPCC Special Report, and IPCC Assessment Report 5 currently under preparation will again cover the issue.

Scope of Student School

The school addressed the issue how aviation affects the atmosphere and hence climate. Students go aquainted to emission formation by aircraft engines. They got familiar with chemistry and processes in the atmosphere as well as mechanisms for climate impact. Metrics for quantifying the impact of aviation on climate change were presented. The political relevant topic of monetisation of such impacts was discussed. The school provided insight in mitigation options with regards to airframe technology, operational measures and economical measures. All lectures were distributed as printed material to participating students.
